Keighley College students visit local housing development

A group of college students have visited a £4.7m housing development in Baildon to see the work that community regeneration specialist, Keepmoat, is carrying out on behalf of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

The level two electrical students from Keighley College made the trip to the site on Cliffe Lane West to find out more about the new homes currently under construction.

The first phase of the Cliffe Lane development consists of 35 two and three bed affordable homes. Work began on site in June 2016, with completion scheduled for June 2017.

Darren Kemp, Keepmoat contracts manager, said: “At Keepmoat, we believe it is important to encourage students to visit our developments and gain an understanding of the processes and procedures carried out on a construction site, as well as the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the students to Cliffe Lane and meet the next generation of construction talent. During the tour, the students asked some very important questions about the build, which related back to their studies at college.

“We look forward to seeing some of the students again over the coming months for work experience placements, which will give them an even better understanding of careers in the construction industry.”

Coun Val Slater, Bradford Council’s deputy leader, said: “I hope the students enjoyed their visit to the housing development in Cliffe Lane, Baildon, where Bradford Council is working in partnership with Keepmoat.

“The Council secured £825,000 funding from the Homes and Communities Agency’s affordable housing programme 2015/18 to build 70 homes at Cliffe Lane as part of our programme to build 157 new homes, and work on the first 35 is well underway. We are currently looking at tenders for Phase 2 of the Cliffe Lane development.”

Amar Nazir, Electrical Lecturer at Keighley College, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see modern construction techniques in action; this visit has brought theory classes to life.  Our electrical students enjoyed the site visit and are now looking forward to working with the site team when they go on work experience.”
